Advancing additive manufacturing through standardization

A successful partnership demands much more than “just” a strong product. 3YOURMIND has positioned themselves in long-lasting and strong partnerships to digitize AM workflows in a way that is ready to scale alongside production needs.

3YOURMIND believes that the only correct way to push “additive” into manufacturing is by creating industry-wide standards so they dedicate resources to help develop those standards in leading organizations.

Umati (Universal Machine Tool Interface)

3YOURMIND is a proud member of the UNIVERSAL MACHINE TOOL INTERFACE working group. The goal of this group is to provide a universal connection between machine tools and peripherals to customer-specific IT ecosystems. Exactly this aspect is missing in the AM world today. Machine connectivity are provided as one-off solutions which demand high maintenance and provide low stability. 3YOURMIND has set out to change this by spearheading the development of this standard and applying it to additive manufacturing.

The umati program is a strong partnership between Chiron, DMG Mori, Emag, Grob Werke, Heller, Liebherr Verzahntechnik, Trumpf, Beckhoff, Bosch Rexroth, Fanuc, Heidenhain, Siemens, and other key representatives from the manufacturing industry. The most important aspect is that all machine data is funneled into a standard format to simplify scheduling, track analytics, and process data. Unlike MTConnect, umati also supports standards for sending data to the machine which will pave the way for automated, agile manufacturing.

SLM Solutions is the first OEM to have built an umati-connection together with 3YOURMIND. 3YOURMIND has built drivers to translate production data from EOS and Ultimaker machines into the umati standard, hence establishing standard machine connectivity. Other OEMs including Trumpf, Prodways, and Renishaw are already part of the umati working group and will be connected in the first wave. 3YOURMIND is in contact with every major OEM (including HP), and post-processing providers, to push the standard forward and secure additional integrations.
