5 keys to success in a Distributed Manufacturing model

Blogpost

Yesterday’s version of manufacturing is predominantly based on identifying cheap ways to produce parts overseas. A local manufacturer spends months and years developing a trustworthy relationship with a production partner on a different continent because their nation utilizes cheap labor to produce parts. In turn, these parts are shipped around the world, inevitably adding to the cost of doing business, and eventually arrive at their final destination. The Widget company depends on a singular or limited number of suppliers and becomes reliant on warehouses filled with spare parts in case of an emergency. Not to mention the logistical nightmares that come with the traditional manufacturing network are painful and costly. Simply put, the global supply chain is cumbersome and outdated.

The COO’s Guide to Building a Digital Warehouse

Blogpost

The spare parts business is struggling. By 2025, 8% of SKU’s will transition from conventional sourcing to on demand additive manufacturing. The global MRO market is estimated at $660 billion — impacting oil and gas, defense, energy and transportation industries. Those that do not embrace the next generation of industrialization will be left holding the keys to empty warehouses or witnessing a lack of utilization on outdated capital equipment. These industries are notorious for having vast, complex supply chains, and the lack of information/data from the OEM’s tends to be problematic when it comes to quick production requirements. Simply put, many facilities are becoming more self-reliant and contemplating the next steps to take. Supply Chain Managers and Innovation Officers are asking, how do we prepare our facility to simultaneously meet the demands of our current clients and unlock the potential for future innovation?

5 Lessons for AM, part 3/3: 5 Guidelines for Resilient Supply Chains

Blogpost

3D printing was able to support the covid response effort for critical, stop-gap production. But after less than one month, conventional manufacturing was already producing almost all of those parts, with the exception of parts that were generally better suited for AM. That illustrates that 3D printing has a critical, but limited role in the supply chain. Those guidelines can be taken to move 3D Printing from an innovation budget into a secure procurement plan as part of a resilient supply chain.

The umati standard influences AM

Blogpost

Additive manufacturing technologies and materials have made significant progress over the past several years - but even the top production houses still handle the majority of their scheduling and quality control using manual processes. This is because of the complexity of the work, the lack of best practices and the development of independent machine data systems. We know from other industries (USB, CDs, paper sizes) once those standards are in place and in use - a whole host of other processes simplify and production costs drop. The same will be true for additive manufacturing machines - the easier it is to exchange and share information, the more efficient they are. Companies across all industries involved in production are requesting a universal machine interface to ensure clear data collection, streamlined communication channels and control of different machine types. Umati enables machine vendors to provide a connectivity interface to easily connect to customer-specific software solutions.

Meshify Lattice Structures: Lightweight Components

Interview

Meshify is a software tool which enables designs that take full advantage of 3D printing and create something that’s never been available before. The secret of Meshify’s successes lies in their innovative algorithms that create structures with significantly less material. This has a significant impact on 3D printing, where material is in direct proportion to cost and production time. Over the past few years they have developed advanced processes to reduce the material while maintaining the strength of industrial components.
